Skin care and acne questions

Hello everyone,

I have been getting a lot of questions regarding skin care and acne.

What I want to know is...

What do my readers want to know about skin care and acne?

I cater to my readers, so please put your questions in the comments section.

As a former acne sufferer, I know exactly what you are going through, what products work and don't work.

I don't fluff things up...I give you a straight, to the point, direct answer.

I am also in the medical field and studying to become a dermatologist. Therefore, I do know a lot about skin. However, you don't need a degree to know what works and doesn't.

I have tried everything under the sun; high end to low end; prescription to over the counter.

Anyway,
I'll let you guys get posting.

All questions will be answered in order.

They will all be in one post (skin care and acne Q&A) and updated once a new answer is posted.

Thank you all!

NutraSonic: 3.5 month update

It's been about 3.5 months since I bought my NutraSonic and I couldn't be happier!

My skin is still clear, looks wonderful, has a natural glow to it and my acne scars are gone! It's amazing how a $50 gadget can get rid of acne scars that were there for 3-5 years, that my $200 prescription couldn't even get the slightest results. Not to mention, it would take AT LEAST 6 months to notice the difference.

I will say this again:
If you cannot afford the clarisonic or just don't like it, please but this! It's better, cheaper, cheaper to maintain and get replacement brushes than the clarisonic.

I have used my nutrasonic everyday, twice a day and I haven't replaced my brush yet. It still looks fine.

People who are complaint about the splatter: shake excess water off and turn it on AFTER you have it on your face.

Charging problem/looses charge: you didn't charge it correctly the first time, which is why you are having these problems now. Mine took MORE than 24 hours to properly charge.

And, I'm hoping you all know to keep the cord away from the water.

Thanks!

Do your thang :)

Yves Saint Laurent Lipstick Dupe

Yes. I found a dupe for Yves Saint Laurent's lipstick ROUGE PUR COUTURE SPF15 in 15 Brun Sienne ($30).

Actually i found two dupes. Wet N Wild Silk Finish Lipstick in 549A (read review and swatches here) and E.L.F. Essentials Lipstick in Fantasy (read review and swatches here).

Mascara that gives Volume AND Length???

Okay girls,

Im going nuts here. Seems like i only find mascara that does gives only volume or length but not both.

Do you know of any (except Covergirl Fusion).

I have tried L'Oreal Telescopic Mascara in carbon black and L'Oreal Voluminous also in carbon black. I love how dark my lashes look. However, Telescopic gives amazing length, but nothing in terms of volume. Voluminous gives great volume but no length.

HELP!

Please leave your suggestions in the comments.

Equate Clear Zinc Oxide Sunscreen Cream SPF 50

ProductEquate Clear Zinc Oxide Sunscreen Cream SPF 50
Price: $4.00

Description as stated on Website:

Equate clear zinc oxide sunscreen SPF 50 goes on clear and provides UVA & UVB protection against the sun's harmful rays. It is gentle enough for daily use.
  • Cream
  • 1 fl oz
  • Helps prevent sunburn
  • Won't irritate sensitive skin
  • Non-greasy
  • Water resistant
  • Sweat resistant
  • Absorbs quickly
  • Retains SPF after 80 minutes
  • SPF 50
  • Fragrance- free
  • Quality guaranteed
  • Won't clog pores
My thoughts: I would have LOVED this sunscreen if it didnt oxidize! After I put this on, i wait for about 5-10 minutes to put on my foundation (powder or liquid). When i finish applying my foundation, regardless of its powder or liquid, you can instantly see the difference in color; My face is about 2-3 shades darker and looks red/orange and my neck is yellow and much lighter.

The fact that the label says "face" is misleading, because it deffineltly isnt for the face. If it was, it wouldnt oxidize this horribly. The price is perfect though...its  shame.

Maybelline Eyestudio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner, MAC Dupe

ProductMaybelline Eyestudio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner
Price: $8 - $10
Shade: Blackest Black
Description as stated on Website: Oil-free formula holds highly concentrated pigments in a clear gel base, Smudge-proof and waterwproof for 24 hours, Most intense line for lasting drama, Safe for sensitive eyes and ophthalmologist-tested, Contact lens safe.
My thoughts: I love this eyeliner. It comes with a brush, which is good, but I use my ELF Studio brush that came with their gel eyeliner (review here). This eyeliner, is intense black, which is really hard to find, it doesnt smudge, lasts all day and night. This is a DUPE for MAC Fluidline Eye-Liner Gel in Blacktrack.

NYX Fly With Me Mascara

ProductNYX Fly With Me Mascara
Price: $13.00 at Ulta
Shade: Jet Black

Description as stated on Website: The sky is the limit with this mascara! NYX’s new “Fly with Me” formula intensifies lashes 100x’s making average lashes infinitely long, boldy black and provides intense coverage for extreme thickness.
My thoughts: This mascara reminds me of L'Oreal Telescopic Mascara. The wands are very similar. It gives amazing length, but not so much in terms of thickness, its okay though. I wouldn't buy it again because it is rather pricey at $13 and L'Oreal is cheaper. This is for people who have the thick lashes but want length.

E.L.F. Essentials Lipstick

Product: E.L.F. Essentials Lipstick
Price: $1.00 at target or eyeslipsface.com
Shade: Fantasy

My thoughts:  I absolutely LOVE this lipstick and wish i discovered it sooner! Its a beautiful, neutral color, that just tints your lips to slightly emphasize your natural lip color and gives it more oomph.

The color is brownish/nude. Real nude color never look good on my skin tone, since I am yellow, it makes me look washed out and my lips look really weird. My lips natural lips are not deeply pigmented or anything but are slightly pinkish without anything on them, but I Do need to put on some sort of color because then, since they hardly have any color to begin with, they look almost white.

Lasting power is okay. If you eat or drink something, you have to reapply. If you dont, you have to reapply after 2-4 hours. Not a big deal for such a beautiful color and its only $1! This lipstick is also very similar to Wet N Wild's Silk Finish Lipstick in 549A, except the Wet N Wild has  just a tad bit more color than this. Both Beautiful and my HG'S!

Milani The MultiTasker Powder (MAC Dupe)

UPDATE 5/1/11:  I had to return this. The color looked yellow, but that thing has red in it. I looked like i got sunburned and didnt know or something. I loved this thing though... :(

Here is what you have all been waiting for!

Product: Milani The Multitasker Face Powder
Price: $6.49 at wallgreen
Shade: Light to medium
Coverage: Light to medium, buildable
My thoughts:  I love this powder! This doesnt settle into fine lines like MAc StudioFix does. You also, dont have to keep on wondering if your powder is still on your face or is coming on and if you need a touchup, like Mac. I had this on for the entire day and forgot to touch up. 5 hours later i look at my face and it didnt settle into my lines (i dont have any but some powders like to accentuate the microscopic lines around my mouth and under my eyes).

The texture is heavenly. It is soo creamy, smooth and velevty. The coverage is good too. it can be light to medium.

The ONLY thing i dont like is that the shade isnt really a good match for NC25, but you can work with it, still look good and save money.

What I do is i put my primer on, then i put this powder on. On top of that i either dust my Mac NC30 or my ELF pressed powder.

E.L.F. Studio Pressed Powder vs Mac StudioFix Pressed Powder

UPDATE 5/1/11:  THIS DIDNT OXIDIZE!!! Sorry for the bold, but i wanted to make sure everyone was clear. My face was acting weird when i first tried it (used a different sunscreen). i LOVE this powder! It is a perfect match for my nc25 skin and it doesnt even come off. What i also love about this is that 1) it matches! 2) doesnt oxidize, however after about 4-5 hours, i have to retouch cuz i got a little shiny...no biggie 3) it doesnt settle into fine lines or wrinkles like the overly priced mac studiofix powder foundation!!!! 4) It has medium coverage but you can make it full if you want, but after you apply it, regardless if your application is sheer to full, it looks like you have No makeup on! Your skin shines through, not the powder hahah.I love this! Im going to stock up!

UPDATE 4/25/11: I love this powder however...i think it oxidizes on my skin. Inside i look at it and it looks wonderful...when i go outside my face looks darker and has a pinkish tone to it...like i am sunburned.  Any thoughts?
---------------------------------------------------------------
Product: E.L.F. Studio Pressed Powder

Shade: Porcelain

Price: $3.00

Coverage: Medium to Full

My Thoughts:  Finally! Something that is yellow enough for my skin! This powder is perfect! It covers very well and matches!

I tested it two ways:
  1. I tried to see how much coverage it had without wearing any concealer on my post acne marks (they are brown/purple...not big though, about the size of a corn kernel.
  2. I put on my regular concealer (Covergirl Simply Ageless Yellow Corrector) first then applied the powder over it.
Results:
  1. It covered VERY well. I was surprised. maybe even better than my StudioFix. When i use my MAC, i can still see some of my marks through it, when i dont use concealer and if i dont use enough concealer, they still show through. E.L.F. props to you! It looked a little cakey, but after a about 15 minutes, its fine.
  2. I dont know if it was my concealer, but over the powder, i could see the cakey area where i put the powder on top of my concealer. It looked a little different than the rest of my face without concealer. But, since it covers so well without it, why even put on concealer?
See how close the shade compares to MAC NC25:
